SUMMARY:Presentation by Reid Walters and Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:All Grayson LandCare meetings are open to the public.  They typically occur the third Monday of the month from 7-8pm  and include a brief update on GLC activities and a presentation on topics of local interest. The February presentation features Reid Walters\, the current town manager of Independence.This is a perfect opportunity to meet Reid and get an update on Town events and recently awarded grants. In addition to serving as the town manager of Independence\, Reid also serves as chairman of the Virginia Carolina Water Authority\, a multi-state water authority providing water to Sparta NC and Independence VA\, and as manager of the Independence DMV Select. Reid has his Masters in Public Administration from Appalachian State University and undergraduate degrees in History\, Political Science\, and Social Science Education from Western Carolina University. He is a graduate of the Municipal and County Administration program at the UNC School of Government and a member of the UNC School of Government’s LGFCU ‘Leading for Results’ Fellowship.  The professional organizations he is a member of include the International City and County Managers Association\, the Virginia Local Government Managers Association\, and the North Carolina City-County Managers Association. Reid is native of Raleigh NC.

DESCRIPTION:Grayson LandCare is pleased to announce Britt Boucher as the featured speaker for March.  Mr Boucher\, a forester\, will speak on best forest management practices for landowners on Monday March 16 from 7-8pm.  Britt will discuss the plan he has developed:  A Forest Future Vision. \nBritt grew up outside Pittsburgh in the industrial landscapes of coal mining\, gas\, oil and timber extraction… That started the burning question of…. Why are the woods were treated so badly? Britt went on to search for those answers… “A Masters in Forest Economics from Virginia Tech gave me the tools I needed to work on my question… but no answers.” he said. With the exception of his military service\, time farming\, and teaching a class every now and then\, Britt has spent most of his life working in and on the Forest.   A big part of a Forester’s job is carefully observing and counting things. \nA Forest Future Vision is the result of those years of study. It addresses: 1) our Planet’s essential need to store carbon\, (2) the land steward’s need for cash\, (3) the Forest’s silviculture needs\, (4) while accepting the constraints of mechanized harvesting equipment and the challenges of the loggers.  The goal: Forests that build long-term asset and ecological values. In this photo and video presentation\, you’ll see that there’s much more to a nature-friendly garden than birds and butterflies! \nMany people approach gardening as a constant struggle against the outside world. They’re perpetually at war with nature\, investing in chemical treatments to fight off mammals\, birds\, and insects in an effort to preserve their garden as a pristine\, unspoiled patch of earth. Marlene proposes a radically different method of gardening: What if\, instead of battling the natural world\, we invite it into our yards? The result is a nature-friendly garden which attracts and meets the needs of numerous wildlife species while maintaining a thriving and varied landscape of flowers\, vegetables\, and other plants. DESCRIPTION:Just a reminder to enter the Grayson LandCare(GLC) pest and beneficial bug photography contest. The last day to submit entries is Wednesday September 16th.  The winners will be announced via Zoom during the regular monthly GLC meeting Monday September 21 at 7pm.  Winners will also be posted on the GLC and IFM facebook pages\, webpages and released to the newspapers.  This was originally planned to be a special class of the Grayson County Fair photography contest. Unfortunately\, like so many large events this year\, the Fair has been cancelled. DESCRIPTION:It’s almost time for the GLC Auction and annual meeting. I hope you have it on your calendar for Monday October 19 at 7pm. I know we all wish we could have been together in September at Eagle View Event Center enjoying the beautiful venue\, scenery and a wonderful potluck. We deeply appreciate Chris and Joy Butlers donation of the use of their beautiful facility .However\, the reality is we need to meet via ZOOM and do the important work of nominating new board members\, renewing our membership or deciding to join\, and bidding on all the wonderful items that have been donated by our members.\nRealizing that most of us spent the Spring cleaning out closets and getting rid of stuff- we have added the option of buying an unlimited number of food boxes or months of soup for a new program under the GLC umbrella-Food Independence. So many folks in our area are facing food insecurity for the first time or continuing to struggle as the effects of the pandemic linger on and we are proud that 4 GLC members stepped up to meet that need. They are providing over 100 boxes of food each month without the support of Feeding Southwest Va. The rules of that organization require they be self sustaining the for the first 6 months. They started in July so they are buying food at regular prices until January.\nThanks in advance for supporting GLC and everything our members do for our community. SUMMARY:August 16 presentation features New River Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:Grayson LandCare will be hosting the new Executive Director of the New River Conservancy at our regular monthly meeting August 16 at 7pm\,  in the 1908 auditorium. Our choice of speaker seemed appropriate since Grayson County has proclaimed August as River month. A committee of stake holders led by the New River Wildlife Club is hoping to coordinate several river cleanups with multiple groups taking different sections of the New river in Grayson County.

DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to be able to hold our Annual meeting\, potluck and Service Auction at Eagleview Event Center. A big thank you to Chris and Joy Butler for their generous donation of their lovely venue for this event. The schedule for the evening: 5pm doors open. 5:30 Silent Auction opens for bidding. 6pm Dinner. 7pm business meeting\, Silent Auction closes. 7:30 Live Auction begins. 8pm Checkout. The Service Auction is Grayson LandCare’s largest fundraiser of the year. The potluck is always remarkable-GLC members are fabulous cooks! River Ridge will be providing delicious meatloaf.  Our wonderful members are asked to bring a vegetarian option\, side\, salad\, or dessert to share. We will be electing new board members. All GLC events and meetings are open to the public and free of charge. I can’t wait to see everyone!

DESCRIPTION:It has become a tradition to invite local authors to read from their books at the November meeting.  On Monday November 15\, at 7pm\, we will feature authors Deborah Clark and Robert La Combe. Deb’s new book is Turn Left at the Big Oak. Rob’s is The Woodlands of Ivor. You can purchase signed copies of their books at the event.  What a perfect gift for the holidays! \nWe will meet again at the 1908 Courthouse upstairs in the Baldwin auditorium to allow for social distancing. DESCRIPTION:Town Manager Reid Walters will give an update of Town achievements for 2021 and plans for 2022. Join us at the 1908 Courthouse Baldwin Auditorium (Upstairs) February 21\, 2022 from 7-8pm. All Grayson LandCare meetings are free and open to the Public. \nReid Walters is the current town manager of Independence. In addition to serving as the town manager of Independence\, Reid also serves as chairman of the Virginia Carolina Water Authority\, a multi-state water authority providing water to Sparta NC and Independence VA\, and as manager of the Independence DMV Select. Reid has his Masters in Public Administration from Appalachian State University and undergraduate degrees in History\, Political Science\, and Social Science Education from Western Carolina University. He is a graduate of the Municipal and County Administration program at the UNC School of Government and a member of the UNC School of Government’s LGFCU ‘Leading for Results’ Fellowship.  The professional organizations he is a member of include the International City and County Managers Association\, the Virginia Local Government Managers Association\, and the North Carolina City-County Managers Association. Reid is native of Raleigh NC.

SUMMARY:July meeting features the Permaculture Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us July 18th at the Church of the Good Shepherd to tour the Permaculture Garden.  This GLC project started 5 years ago when Cynthia Taylor offered to teach a permaculture class and the Church of the Good Shepherd offered to let the group use a 1/2 acre as a demonstration garden for permaculture\, with the provision that it be used to grow food for people in need.  Turning a hayfield into a vibrant\, productive food forest doesn’t happen overnight; but as the community partners celebrate the fifth anniversary of this initiative\, it is beginning to “bear fruit.”  The garden now includes a  pollinator garden along the driveway\, a food forest\, a vegetable garden\, a Cross Garden and wooden benches for rest and mediation.\nThe Permaculture Group has logged 3100 hours of volunteer labor in the last five years.  More volunteers are needed\, and anyone is welcome to join the group.
