SUMMARY:Film Series: Grow Food
DESCRIPTION:The First Friday Film Series\, hosted by Grayson LandCare & Church of the Good Shepherd brings documentary films to the public\, complete with popcorn and panel discussions afterward. \nFirst Fridays at 7:00 pm\, April through August at Church of the Good Shepherd: 9441 Grayson Pkwy\, Galax. \nAugust 2nd\nGrow Food\n \nDocumentary filmmakers seek to charge a global movement with one big idea: growing food can fix a majority of the world’s problems. GROW FOOD\, a powerful story about local heroes bringing abundance to their communities will inspire and activate the multitude to join in and be the change we wish to see in the world. It is a documentary about you\, me\, and the current state of our planet – but most importantly it is about solutions – the solution – Grow Food. It may sound strange\, but it turns out the solution to most of our environmental and health problems is right beneath our feet – soil. Did you know that a large portion of the CO2 in the atmosphere actually came from the soil? Did you know that plants grown and managed in a biologically conscious way can put that very carbon back into the soil?! \nBy growing healthy food\, which creates healthy soil\, we are able to decrease carbon in the atmosphere! What happens when plants and microbes build healthy soil? We have more resilient food systems\, cleaner water\, cleaner air\, a better world. Not to mention fewer toxins in our food and environment! One simple act for so many benefits on so many levels! \nIndependently filmed over the course of a year\, GROW FOOD takes an unprecedented and intimate look at how people in the movement are bringing healthy food to their community. It is not only a deeply personal story but one with real-world utility for communities struggling with food security and low food quality worldwide.

SUMMARY:Film Series: Earth Seasoned #GapYear
DESCRIPTION:The First Friday Film Series\, hosted by Grayson LandCare & Church of the Good Shepherd brings documentary films to the public\, complete with popcorn and panel discussions afterward. \nFirst Fridays at 7:00 pm\, April through August at Church of the Good Shepherd: 9441 Grayson Pkwy\, Galax. \nJuly 5th\nEarth Seasoned #GapYear\n \nEarth Seasoned…#GapYear is the inspiring story of five young urban women who spend a gap year between high school and college living semi-primitively in a remote mountainside wilderness in Oregon. Told mainly through the story of Tori Davis\, a teenager with learning difficulties\, the film chronicles the group’s four seasons in the woods as part of the Caretaker nature program. As the seasons succeed\, the group has to adapt to what the wilderness provides and to what it withholds. \nThrough lyrical live action footage and smartly paced animation\, the film reveals how separately and together the girls learn ancient skills of craftsmanship and teamwork and forge deep powers of resilience and self-reliance. Earth Seasoned has essential messages about talent\, compassion\, and community and about the real conditions for human flourishing. \n

SUMMARY:Film Series ANTHROPOCENE: THE HUMAN EPOCH
DESCRIPTION:The First Friday Film Series\, hosted by Grayson LandCare & Church of the Good Shepherd brings documentary films to the public\, complete with popcorn and panel discussions afterward. \nFirst Fridays at 7:00 pm\, April through August at Church of the Good Shepherd: 9441 Grayson Pkwy\, Galax. \nJune 7th\nANTHROPOCENE: THE HUMAN EPOCH\n \nA cinematic meditation on humanity’s massive reengineering of the planet\, ANTHROPOCENE: The Human Epoch is four years in the making feature documentary film from the multiple-award-winning team of Jennifer Baichwal\, Nicholas de Pencier and Edward Burtynsky. \nThird in a trilogy that includes Manufactured Landscapes (2006) and Watermark (2013)\, the film follows the research of an international body of scientists\, the Anthropocene Working Group who\, after nearly 10 years of research\, are arguing that the Holocene Epoch gave way to the Anthropocene Epoch in the mid-twentieth century\, because of profound and lasting human changes to the Earth. \nFrom concrete seawalls in China that now cover 60% of the mainland coast\, to the biggest terrestrial machines ever built in Germany\, to psychedelic potash mines in Russia’s Ural Mountains\, to metal festivals in the closed city of Norilsk\, to the devastated Great Barrier Reef in Australia and surreal lithium evaporation ponds in the Atacama desert\, the filmmakers have traversed the globe using high end production values and state of the art camera techniques to document evidence and experience of human planetary domination.

SUMMARY:12th Annual Land Stewardship Competition
DESCRIPTION:The public is welcome to view the entries between 11 am and noon\, on April 13\, 2019\, and to attend the awards ceremony which will follow the final tabulation of the judging scores.  \nGrayson LandCare has announced the Twelfth Annual Land Stewardship Competition. All students grades 8-12 enrolled in a school in Grayson County (Grayson County Schools\, Galax City Schools\, Oak Hill Academy) or who are residents of Grayson County and homeschooled are encouraged to participate. The Land Stewardship Fair will be held Saturday\, April 13\, 2019\, at Grayson Co. High School Cafeteria\, in Independence\, VA. \nAt the fair\, students will present their projects to the judges and cash prizes will be awarded to first ($1000)\, second ($500)\, and third place ($250) winners along with up to 5 commendation prizes of $50. The public is welcome to view the entries between 11 am and noon\, on April 13\, 2019\, and to attend the awards ceremony which will follow the final tabulation of the judging scores. Any questions about the competition should be sent to Harriet Meinecke hhmeinecke@gmail.com. \nThe competition\, which is sponsored by Grayson LandCare and resembles a science fair\, encourages our local students to explore real economic\, environmental\, and social problems facing Grayson County and suggest innovative solutions that can really work in our local communities. Contestants are invited to think creatively about how we can be good stewards of our land and still meet the triple bottom line of sustainability―being economically successful\, protecting our environment\, and promoting community involvement and well-being. \nThe competition has grown tremendously since it began twelve years ago. Topics in past years have included such ideas as establishing a community garden\, raising honey bees for profit\, setting up a garden at the local nursing home\, organic poultry farms\, raising meat rabbits\, energy efficient homes\, programs to improve water quality in lakes and ponds\, recycling\, wind energy\, bird watching and tourism\, improving riparian buffers\, farmers markets\, a community coffee shop\, and many more. \nGrayson LandCare\, a non-profit organization\, welcomes financial support to help cover the cost of the competition (donations of any size are welcomed). Donations should be sent to Grayson LandCare\, PO Box 373\, Independence\, VA 24348. All sponsors will be acknowledged in press releases and announcements and will be listed in the program for the Land Stewardship Fair in April. Information is available on the website graysonlandcare.org/our-work/land-stewardship-competition.

SUMMARY:Film Series: Symbiotic Earth
DESCRIPTION:The First Friday Film Series\, hosted by Grayson LandCare & Church of the Good Shepherd brings documentary films to the public\, complete with popcorn and panel discussions afterward. \nFirst Fridays at 7:00 pm\, April through August at Church of the Good Shepherd: 9441 Grayson Pkwy\, Galax. \nApril 5th\nSymbiotic Earth\n \nSymbiotic Earth explores the life and ideas of scientific rebel Lynn Margulis who challenged entrenched theories of male-dominated science. As a young scientist in the 1960s\, Margulis was ridiculed when she first proposed that symbiosis – when organisms live and work together — was a key driver of evolution\, but she persisted. Through numerous collaborations\, she caused a seismic shift in our understanding of life. \nMargulis’ symbiotic narrative presents an alternative to the destructive worldview that has led to climate change and extreme capitalism. With James Lovelock\, she developed the Gaia Theory that all life is interconnected and interdependent. Her vision offers bold insights into health\, society\, and nature\, and inspires creative approaches to our pressing environmental and social crises. \n

SUMMARY:Opioid Analgesics: Pain and Abuse
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Linda Dykstra\, Kenan Professor Emeritus in Psychology and Neuroscience\, University of North Carolina (UNC) @ Chapel Hill will give a presentation titled: Opioid Analgesics: Pain and Abuse. Linda and her husband\, Bill Hylander\, became members of Grayson Landcare upon retiring to Grayson County where they own a farm in the Spring Valley community. \nLinda received her PhD from the University of Chicago in 1972 and moved to North Carolina the following year to accept a position at UNC. During her 40+ years at UNC\, Linda’s research interests focused on the behavioral pharmacology of opioid analgesics and the relationship between their analgesic effects and their abuse potential\, in particular\, their tendency to produce tolerance and dependence. At UNC\, Linda also taught courses in Drugs and Human Behavior and directed a training grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse that provided predoctoral training in research on drug abuse. She also served as the Dean of the Graduate School\, overseeing UNC’s numerous masters and doctoral programs. Although she is officially retired from UNC\, she continues to serve as co-director for a postdoctoral training program at UNC and to team teach a course in Behavioral Pharmacology offered jointly between UNC and the Wake Forest School of Medicine. \nAlthough we are well aware of the opioid epidemic and its devastating consequences at both local and national levels\, we often lack basic knowledge of the drugs within the opioid class. Within this extensive class of drugs are opioids that have legitimate clinical applications\, however\, there are others which are responsible for the current opioid epidemic and yet others which can provide effective treatments for “opioid use disorder”. This presentation will provide background information about the opioids\, their analgesic effects\, their unique pharmacological profiles as well as their tendency to produce tolerance and dependence and lead to abuse. The presentation will also discuss current initiatives to reduce opioid abuse as well as some of the interventions available for individuals seeking treatment for “opioid use disorder (OUD).”

SUMMARY:The Community Food Forest Handbook
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Bukowski is a researcher\, author\, educator\, and communicator. She is currently wrapping up her Ph.D. at the College of Natural Resources and the Environment at Virginia Tech\, where she co-taught an agroforestry and whole-farm-planning course that incorporated permaculture principles. She studied with Dave Jacke on food forest design\, has a certificate in Collaborative Community Leadership\, and is a trained facilitator. \n\nCatherine previously co-coordinated a forest farming virtual community for the online Cooperative Extension network and now sits on the Board of Directors for the Association of Temperate Agroforestry. She has worked internationally in community development and agroforestry as a researcher in Costa Rica\, Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras and program manager for Trees for the Future. Her latest accomplishment is the publication of The Community Food Forest Handbook: How to Plan\, Organize\, and Nurture Edible Gathering Places which can be purchased in advance of its July 2018 publication at www.communityfoodforests.com/handbook\nFueled by the popularity of permaculture\, agroecology\, and agroforestry- community food forests are capturing the imaginations of people in neighborhoods\, towns\, and cities across the United States. Along with community gardens and farmers markets\, community food forests can help create access to nutritious fresh food and promote environmental sustainability. But perhaps their most important outcome is the educational opportunities they provide in the process. They are interactive learning grounds focused on food- and eco-literacy as well as civic engagement for creating change in local food systems and urban green infrastructure. While interest in installing community food forests in public spaces is on the rise\, the best ways to organize and lead groups of people to successfully create a food forest project has received little attention—and that is the focus of The Community Food Forest Handbook! \nJoin us November 19th for a presentation about the book and book signing.
