DESCRIPTION:Dr. Curtis Richardson\, Professor of Resource Ecology Nicholas School of the Environment\, Director\, Duke University Wetland Center\, will give a presentation titled: Stream & Wetland Restoration: The Key to Improving Water Quality and Habitat Diversity on your Land.  Dr. Richardson owns property in Grayson County and has spent many weekends here. \nDr. Richardson’s research interests in applied ecology center on long-term ecosystem response to large-scale perturbations such as acid rain\, toxic materials\, flooding\, or nutrient additions. He has specific interests in wetland ecosystems\, phosphorus nutrient dynamics\, and the effects of environmental stress on plant metabolism and growth. Major research focuses on wetlands as nutrient sinks and transformers. His current research activities include: (1) the effects of nutrient additions and hydrology on Everglades phosphorus retention and community changes; (2) heavy metal sorption\, storage\, and removal from pocosin peatlands; (3) wetland development trends in the southeastern United States; and (4) the effects of highway construction on wetland functions. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for as County administrator\, Bill Shepley discusses Grayson County’s Future Initiatives. Shepley hopes to find solutions to energize the county as a whole. Efforts to address internet access\, job creation\, healthcare\, businesses and other needs within the county are reflected in these initiatives. \n“I’ve been county administrator for the past year\, and during that time I’ve studied the comprehensive plan that was created for the county several years ago\,” Shepley said in an interview with the Declaration. “Using the comprehensive plan\, I’ve mixed some ideas I’ve come up with\, with other suggestions made by people in the community.” \nThe county board has approved further exploration of these ideas to determine their feasibility. All ideas are in their early stages at this point\, and no funding has been approved by the county at this stage to move forward with any projects\, Shepley noted. \nJoin us to learn more about future plans for Grayson County.

A Small Good Thing follows three main stories – Jen and Pete\, an idealistic\, young couple who have just purchased land to farm\, Tim\, an Iraqi vet who uses yoga and cycling to keep addictions at bay\, and Shirley\, a community organizer who works with urban youth in a city overwhelmed by heroin addiction and blight. Over the course of a year\, the film follows them through the inevitable ups and downs of life. DESCRIPTION:Free fun for the whole family during the entire Market!  At Kids Day\, learn to throw a lasso\, print with wood blocks\, milk a “cow\,” and have fun hula hooping and playing games. All activities are free and open to kids of all ages. Community partners include Cowbody Don\, 4H\, Virginia Department of Health\, Blue Ridge Discovery Center\, local artist Ellie Kirby\, hula hoops with Laura\, Girl Scouts\, and Bessie the wooden cow. Kids Day began in 2012 and was our 1st Farmers Market Event. It remains one of the most popular activities at the Farmers Market and led to the addition of the Kids Corner every Friday from 10-11 while Grayson County Schools are closed for the summer.

A half-century later Henry County\, like many rural communities across America\, has become a place of quiet ideological struggle. In the span of a generation\, the agrarian virtues of simplicity\, land stewardship\, sustainable farming\, local economies and rootedness to place have been replaced by a capital-intensive model of industrial agriculture characterized by machine labor\, chemical fertilizers\, soil erosion and debt – all of which have frayed the fabric of rural communities.
