SUMMARY:Potluck\, Plant sale\, Tour and meeting June 17 6pm
DESCRIPTION:It’s a field trip\, cookout\, plant sale and tour! Everyone is invited to the permaculture garden for a cookout and “ragged” plant sale. The cookout begins at 6pm at the garden at the Church of the Good Shepherd located at 9441 Grayson Pkwy\, Galax\, VA 24333.\, please bring a side dish to share. This will be followed by a tour of the garden and the plant sale beginning about 6:45pm. It is not necessary to attend the potluck to tour the garden. The plant sale will feature recently divided plants from the garden\, not new seedlings. The permaculture garden features a wide array of native plants and most are excellent for pollinators as well. All proceeds from the sale go to support the Permaculture garden. \nOther permaculture events include a No Mow workshop June 22 9am to noon.  Its an introduction to permaculture principals and designed to help you think of ways to reduce maintenance and increase enjoyment of your space.  In addition there are monthly workdays July 13 and August 10 from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Church of the Good Shepherd\, Galax. The public is invited to join the Grayson Permaculture Group for a variety of tasks required to maintain and expand the Food Forest Garden. Learn from our group of experienced permaculture gardeners and explore the garden with the folks who work to maintain it. Bring gloves and wear closed-toe shoes. Tools and materials provided. Bring your lunch or plan to join the group for lunch at a local sandwich shop. SUMMARY:July meeting features the Permaculture Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us July 18th at the Church of the Good Shepherd to tour the Permaculture Garden.  This GLC project started 5 years ago when Cynthia Taylor offered to teach a permaculture class and the Church of the Good Shepherd offered to let the group use a 1/2 acre as a demonstration garden for permaculture\, with the provision that it be used to grow food for people in need.  Turning a hayfield into a vibrant\, productive food forest doesn’t happen overnight; but as the community partners celebrate the fifth anniversary of this initiative\, it is beginning to “bear fruit.”  The garden now includes a  pollinator garden along the driveway\, a food forest\, a vegetable garden\, a Cross Garden and wooden benches for rest and mediation.\nThe Permaculture Group has logged 3100 hours of volunteer labor in the last five years.  More volunteers are needed\, and anyone is welcome to join the group.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for as County administrator\, Bill Shepley discusses Grayson County’s Future Initiatives. Shepley hopes to find solutions to energize the county as a whole. Efforts to address internet access\, job creation\, healthcare\, businesses and other needs within the county are reflected in these initiatives. \n“I’ve been county administrator for the past year\, and during that time I’ve studied the comprehensive plan that was created for the county several years ago\,” Shepley said in an interview with the Declaration. “Using the comprehensive plan\, I’ve mixed some ideas I’ve come up with\, with other suggestions made by people in the community.” \nThe county board has approved further exploration of these ideas to determine their feasibility. All ideas are in their early stages at this point\, and no funding has been approved by the county at this stage to move forward with any projects\, Shepley noted. \nJoin us to learn more about future plans for Grayson County.

SUMMARY:First Friday Film Series: A Small Good Thing
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 6th at 7:00 pm\, LandCare presents the film A Small Good Thing. \nWe’ve sought ease\, comfort and wealth – but are people happier with more money? What is the science behind a good life? Following several people over a typical year\, A Small Good Thing looks at the simple sources of human happiness. \nWhat makes up a happy life? For the longest time\, we’ve been living as though the more we have the happier we’ll be. Surprisingly\, over the last fifty years\, our standard of living has improved\, but our happiness has not. A Small Good Thing follows three main stories – Jen and Pete\, an idealistic\, young couple who have just purchased land to farm\, Tim\, an Iraqi vet who uses yoga and cycling to keep addictions at bay\, and Shirley\, a community organizer who works with urban youth in a city overwhelmed by heroin addiction and blight. Over the course of a year\, the film follows them through the inevitable ups and downs of life. SUMMARY:First Friday Film Series: Look & See
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 4th at 7:00 pm\, LandCare presents Look & See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry. \n\n\nLOOK & SEE revolves around the divergent stories of several residents of Henry County\, Kentucky who each face difficult choices that will dramatically reshape their relationship with the land and their community. \nIn 1965\, Wendell Berry returned home to Henry County\, where he bought a small farmhouse and began a life of farming\, writing and teaching.  This lifelong relationship with the land and community would come to form the core of his prolific writings. A half-century later Henry County\, like many rural communities across America\, has become a place of quiet ideological struggle. In the span of a generation\, the agrarian virtues of simplicity\, land stewardship\, sustainable farming\, local economies and rootedness to place have been replaced by a capital-intensive model of industrial agriculture characterized by machine labor\, chemical fertilizers\, soil erosion and debt – all of which have frayed the fabric of rural communities.
