SUMMARY:Woodland Medicinal Herbs with Katie Commender via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to have Katie Commander\, Agroforestry Program Director for  Appalachian Sustainable Development join us July 20 as our featured speaker.  After a brief GLC update\, Katie will talk about non-timber forest products and woodland medicinals in particular.  ASD has created a state of the art facility for aggregating and processing these high value native plants while also creating a frame work to ensure they survive into the future by rewarding farmers to use sustainable practices with a higher price for their product.  Find out more about their work here. \nhttps://asdevelop.org/15483-2/

SUMMARY:Cancelled-Marlene Condon presents "Wildlife at home" at the May GLC meeting
DESCRIPTION:Marlene Condon will be  the featured speaker for May. On Monday\, May 18 from 7-8 pm at the Grayson LandCare office at 104 Courthouse Street\, Marlene—who has created nature-friendly gardens for 50 years—will provide a personal look at the backyard wildlife that informs and inspires her writing. In this photo and video presentation\, you’ll see that there’s much more to a nature-friendly garden than birds and butterflies! \nMany people approach gardening as a constant struggle against the outside world. They’re perpetually at war with nature\, investing in chemical treatments to fight off mammals\, birds\, and insects in an effort to preserve their garden as a pristine\, unspoiled patch of earth. Marlene proposes a radically different method of gardening: What if\, instead of battling the natural world\, we invite it into our yards? The result is a nature-friendly garden which attracts and meets the needs of numerous wildlife species while maintaining a thriving and varied landscape of flowers\, vegetables\, and other plants. You will discover the many “jobs” performed by wildlife that keep your yard functioning properly so you can enjoy it instead of worrying about it. \nThe sustainable low-impact garden described in Marlene’s book\, “The Nature-friendly Garden: Creating a Backyard Haven for Plants\, Wildlife\, and People” is a model of environmental balance\, fostering species diversity. Best of all\, it offers a privileged look at the workings of nature\, opening up a new and fascinating world for even the most experienced gardener. \nMarlene’s wildlife commentaries are widely published\, appearing in such publications as The Washington Post and Baltimore Sun and major newspapers throughout Virginia. Her yard was featured on Virginia PBS programs in 1994 and again in 2005. Following the Q & A\, Marlene will sell and sign copies of The Nature-friendly Garden. SUMMARY:Forest Management presentation by Britt Boucher and Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Grayson LandCare is pleased to announce Britt Boucher as the featured speaker for March.  Mr Boucher\, a forester\, will speak on best forest management practices for landowners on Monday March 16 from 7-8pm.  Britt will discuss the plan he has developed:  A Forest Future Vision. \nBritt grew up outside Pittsburgh in the industrial landscapes of coal mining\, gas\, oil and timber extraction… That started the burning question of…. Why are the woods were treated so badly? Britt went on to search for those answers… “A Masters in Forest Economics from Virginia Tech gave me the tools I needed to work on my question… but no answers.” he said. With the exception of his military service\, time farming\, and teaching a class every now and then\, Britt has spent most of his life working in and on the Forest.   A big part of a Forester’s job is carefully observing and counting things. \nA Forest Future Vision is the result of those years of study. It addresses: 1) our Planet’s essential need to store carbon\, (2) the land steward’s need for cash\, (3) the Forest’s silviculture needs\, (4) while accepting the constraints of mechanized harvesting equipment and the challenges of the loggers.  The goal: Forests that build long-term asset and ecological values. Mr Boucher looks forward to sharing this knowledge during this presentation. \nAll Grayson LandCare meetings are open to the public.  They typically occur the third Monday of the month from 7-8pm  and include a brief update on GLC activities and a presentation on topics of local interest.

SUMMARY:Readings by Grayson County Authors
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear readings from two local authors: Richard Rouse “The Welcome Home Door” and Deborah Tilson Clark “Friend\, Foe\, or Family”\n\n\n \n\n\nThe Welcome Home Door is lighthearted\, humorous storytelling from a seasoned traveler firmly grounded now in rural Southern Appalachia. With a love of character and community\, Richard Rouse delights readers with subtle details of relationships\, adjusting to country life\, the wisdom of nature and the landscape of domestic negotiations. Americana with a twist. Regional yet global. Snapshots and slices of life.\n\n\n \n\n\nBorn in Syracuse\, NY\, Richard Rouse spent early years with his siblings playing in the cabbage barns and truck farm fields of peas and potatoes near Preble\, New York. A child of the Depression\, he found entertainment in the natural world\, inspiration from overcoming hardship\, and humor from the human condition. \n\n\n \n\n\nTales of home\, adventure and delight began to form into creative writing in his seventh decade. As a lifelong avid reader\, lover of Gilbert and Sullivan music\, and keen observer of people\, at the age of 88\, these tales coalesced to his first volume in print\, The Welcome Home Door and Other Stories.\n\n\n \n\n\nHis travels eventually led him to settle in rural Southern Appalachia where he resides with his wife\, writing\, gardening\, and growing woodland mushrooms and tinkering with renewable energy systems.\n\n\n \n\n\nDeborah Tilson Clark is a native of Southwest Virginia\, with roots that have been growing in good Grayson County soil for 150 years. She attended Emory & Henry College for a year before marrying; she graduated from Berea College\, in Kentucky\, with a BA in English.\n\n\n \n\n\nBefore she left grade school\, Clark recognized her need to tell stories\, and she has been writing them down and collecting them\, ever since. She was Feature Editor of her high school newspaper\, staff/contributor to the literary magazine at E&H\, and worked for the Declaration and Galax Gazette newspapers. Her work has been published in several regional magazines and journals\, including Blue Ridge Country and Sow’s Ear. Among the creative fiction competitions that Clark has won are the Sherwood Anderson Prize for Fiction\, and the Chautauqua Festival in Wythe County. She is currently a member of the Ridgeline Writers writing group.\n\n\n \n\n\nClark and her husband of nearly 50 years\, Terry\, live on the banks of Guffy Creek in western Grayson County. They have two children\, Jessie Ann and Thomas. Besides her on-going obsession with telling a good tale\, Clark enjoys reading\, quilting\, gardening\, spending time with her 90-year-old mother\, and “doing anything with Ter.”\n\n\nThe authors will be available to sign books after the readings. Books will be available for purchase.

SUMMARY:Opioid Analgesics: Pain and Abuse
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Linda Dykstra\, Kenan Professor Emeritus in Psychology and Neuroscience\, University of North Carolina (UNC) @ Chapel Hill will give a presentation titled: Opioid Analgesics: Pain and Abuse. Linda and her husband\, Bill Hylander\, became members of Grayson Landcare upon retiring to Grayson County where they own a farm in the Spring Valley community. \nLinda received her PhD from the University of Chicago in 1972 and moved to North Carolina the following year to accept a position at UNC. During her 40+ years at UNC\, Linda’s research interests focused on the behavioral pharmacology of opioid analgesics and the relationship between their analgesic effects and their abuse potential\, in particular\, their tendency to produce tolerance and dependence. At UNC\, Linda also taught courses in Drugs and Human Behavior and directed a training grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse that provided predoctoral training in research on drug abuse. She also served as the Dean of the Graduate School\, overseeing UNC’s numerous masters and doctoral programs. Although she is officially retired from UNC\, she continues to serve as co-director for a postdoctoral training program at UNC and to team teach a course in Behavioral Pharmacology offered jointly between UNC and the Wake Forest School of Medicine. \nAlthough we are well aware of the opioid epidemic and its devastating consequences at both local and national levels\, we often lack basic knowledge of the drugs within the opioid class. Within this extensive class of drugs are opioids that have legitimate clinical applications\, however\, there are others which are responsible for the current opioid epidemic and yet others which can provide effective treatments for “opioid use disorder”. This presentation will provide background information about the opioids\, their analgesic effects\, their unique pharmacological profiles as well as their tendency to produce tolerance and dependence and lead to abuse. The presentation will also discuss current initiatives to reduce opioid abuse as well as some of the interventions available for individuals seeking treatment for “opioid use disorder (OUD).”

SUMMARY:The Community Food Forest Handbook
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Bukowski is a researcher\, author\, educator\, and communicator. She is currently wrapping up her Ph.D. at the College of Natural Resources and the Environment at Virginia Tech\, where she co-taught an agroforestry and whole-farm-planning course that incorporated permaculture principles. She studied with Dave Jacke on food forest design\, has a certificate in Collaborative Community Leadership\, and is a trained facilitator. \n\nCatherine previously co-coordinated a forest farming virtual community for the online Cooperative Extension network and now sits on the Board of Directors for the Association of Temperate Agroforestry. She has worked internationally in community development and agroforestry as a researcher in Costa Rica\, Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras and program manager for Trees for the Future. Her latest accomplishment is the publication of The Community Food Forest Handbook: How to Plan\, Organize\, and Nurture Edible Gathering Places which can be purchased in advance of its July 2018 publication at www.communityfoodforests.com/handbook\nFueled by the popularity of permaculture\, agroecology\, and agroforestry- community food forests are capturing the imaginations of people in neighborhoods\, towns\, and cities across the United States. Along with community gardens and farmers markets\, community food forests can help create access to nutritious fresh food and promote environmental sustainability. But perhaps their most important outcome is the educational opportunities they provide in the process. They are interactive learning grounds focused on food- and eco-literacy as well as civic engagement for creating change in local food systems and urban green infrastructure. While interest in installing community food forests in public spaces is on the rise\, the best ways to organize and lead groups of people to successfully create a food forest project has received little attention—and that is the focus of The Community Food Forest Handbook! \nJoin us November 19th for a presentation about the book and book signing.

SUMMARY:Stream & Wetland Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Curtis Richardson\, Professor of Resource Ecology Nicholas School of the Environment\, Director\, Duke University Wetland Center\, will give a presentation titled: Stream & Wetland Restoration: The Key to Improving Water Quality and Habitat Diversity on your Land.  Dr. Richardson owns property in Grayson County and has spent many weekends here. \nDr. Richardson’s research interests in applied ecology center on long-term ecosystem response to large-scale perturbations such as acid rain\, toxic materials\, flooding\, or nutrient additions. He has specific interests in wetland ecosystems\, phosphorus nutrient dynamics\, and the effects of environmental stress on plant metabolism and growth. Major research focuses on wetlands as nutrient sinks and transformers. His current research activities include: (1) the effects of nutrient additions and hydrology on Everglades phosphorus retention and community changes; (2) heavy metal sorption\, storage\, and removal from pocosin peatlands; (3) wetland development trends in the southeastern United States; and (4) the effects of highway construction on wetland functions. \n
