SUMMARY:Natural & Sustainable Building with April Magill
DESCRIPTION:April will be presenting on her work as an Architect\, Natural Builder\, and Community-Building leader\, working to advance sustainable\, high-performing natural methods of construction.  Methods such as Rammed Earth\, Hempcrete\, Cob\, natural plasters & paints and more are regenerative systems\, often sequestering carbon\, environmentally friendly\, and healthy for the laborers and the inhabitants.  April is working to pioneer these methods in the southeast through her work as an architect and through education. April is an Adjunct Professor with ACBA where she teaches a ‘Sustainable Earthen Building Methods’ course.  \n“Finding unions between the built world and regional agriculture so that we can create circular economy cycles within communities\, building with materials that are healthy and naturally available\, building skills within communities as a way to address affordable housing are all issues I am passionate about and excited to share this knowledge with those seeking a better way to build and live.”\nApril lives in Charleston\, SC with her partner Matt and their two kids\, Eli & Wren.\nThey also share a small property\, part-time in Mouth of Wilson\, VA.

SUMMARY:Opioid Analgesics: Pain and Abuse
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Linda Dykstra\, Kenan Professor Emeritus in Psychology and Neuroscience\, University of North Carolina (UNC) @ Chapel Hill will give a presentation titled: Opioid Analgesics: Pain and Abuse. Linda and her husband\, Bill Hylander\, became members of Grayson Landcare upon retiring to Grayson County where they own a farm in the Spring Valley community. \nLinda received her PhD from the University of Chicago in 1972 and moved to North Carolina the following year to accept a position at UNC. During her 40+ years at UNC\, Linda’s research interests focused on the behavioral pharmacology of opioid analgesics and the relationship between their analgesic effects and their abuse potential\, in particular\, their tendency to produce tolerance and dependence. At UNC\, Linda also taught courses in Drugs and Human Behavior and directed a training grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse that provided predoctoral training in research on drug abuse. She also served as the Dean of the Graduate School\, overseeing UNC’s numerous masters and doctoral programs. Although she is officially retired from UNC\, she continues to serve as co-director for a postdoctoral training program at UNC and to team teach a course in Behavioral Pharmacology offered jointly between UNC and the Wake Forest School of Medicine. \nAlthough we are well aware of the opioid epidemic and its devastating consequences at both local and national levels\, we often lack basic knowledge of the drugs within the opioid class. Within this extensive class of drugs are opioids that have legitimate clinical applications\, however\, there are others which are responsible for the current opioid epidemic and yet others which can provide effective treatments for “opioid use disorder”. This presentation will provide background information about the opioids\, their analgesic effects\, their unique pharmacological profiles as well as their tendency to produce tolerance and dependence and lead to abuse. The presentation will also discuss current initiatives to reduce opioid abuse as well as some of the interventions available for individuals seeking treatment for “opioid use disorder (OUD).”

SUMMARY:The Community Food Forest Handbook
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Bukowski is a researcher\, author\, educator\, and communicator. She is currently wrapping up her Ph.D. at the College of Natural Resources and the Environment at Virginia Tech\, where she co-taught an agroforestry and whole-farm-planning course that incorporated permaculture principles. She studied with Dave Jacke on food forest design\, has a certificate in Collaborative Community Leadership\, and is a trained facilitator. \n\nCatherine previously co-coordinated a forest farming virtual community for the online Cooperative Extension network and now sits on the Board of Directors for the Association of Temperate Agroforestry. She has worked internationally in community development and agroforestry as a researcher in Costa Rica\, Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras and program manager for Trees for the Future. Her latest accomplishment is the publication of The Community Food Forest Handbook: How to Plan\, Organize\, and Nurture Edible Gathering Places which can be purchased in advance of its July 2018 publication at www.communityfoodforests.com/handbook\nFueled by the popularity of permaculture\, agroecology\, and agroforestry- community food forests are capturing the imaginations of people in neighborhoods\, towns\, and cities across the United States. Along with community gardens and farmers markets\, community food forests can help create access to nutritious fresh food and promote environmental sustainability. But perhaps their most important outcome is the educational opportunities they provide in the process. They are interactive learning grounds focused on food- and eco-literacy as well as civic engagement for creating change in local food systems and urban green infrastructure. While interest in installing community food forests in public spaces is on the rise\, the best ways to organize and lead groups of people to successfully create a food forest project has received little attention—and that is the focus of The Community Food Forest Handbook! \nJoin us November 19th for a presentation about the book and book signing.

SUMMARY:Stream & Wetland Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Curtis Richardson\, Professor of Resource Ecology Nicholas School of the Environment\, Director\, Duke University Wetland Center\, will give a presentation titled: Stream & Wetland Restoration: The Key to Improving Water Quality and Habitat Diversity on your Land.  Dr. Richardson owns property in Grayson County and has spent many weekends here. \nDr. Richardson’s research interests in applied ecology center on long-term ecosystem response to large-scale perturbations such as acid rain\, toxic materials\, flooding\, or nutrient additions. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Local Author Jim Minick
DESCRIPTION:Grayson LandCare and Blue Ridge Discovery Center have partnered for a reading by local author Jim Minick from his new book: Fire is Your Water on November 20th\, at the LandCare office in Independence at 7:00 pm. Minick will share a presentation on folk healing tradition\, answer questions\, and sign books. There will be a limited number of his books available for sale that evening. \nJim Minick is the author of five books\, including the novel Fire Is Your Water and The Blueberry Years: A Memoir of Farm and Family\, winner of the SIBA Best Nonfiction Book of the Year Award. He’s also written a collection of essays\, Finding a Clear Path\, two books of poetry\, Her Secret Song and Burning Heaven\, and he edited All There Is to Keep by Rita Riddle. \nHis honors include the Jean Ritchie Fellowship in Appalachian Writing\, and the Fred Chappell Fellowship at University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Minick has also won awards from the Southern Independent Booksellers Association\, Southern Environmental Law Center\, The Virginia College Bookstore Association\, Appalachian Writers Association\, Appalachian Heritage\, Now and Then Magazine\, and Radford University. \nMinick’s work has appeared in many publications including Poets & Writers\, Oxford American\, Orion\, Shenandoah\, Encyclopedia of Appalachia\, The Sun\, Conversations with Wendell Berry\, San Francisco Chronicle\, Appalachian Journal\, The Roanoke Times\, and Still. Currently\, he is Assistant Professor of English at Augusta University and Core Faculty at Converse College’s low-residency MFA program. For more information on Jim Minick\, visit www.jim-minick.com. \n“Ada Franklin is a young powwow doctor in the Pennsylvania Dutch\, religious faith tradition. By saying sacred chants\, she can remove warts\, stanch bleeding\, and “take out fire” to heal burns. That all changes on a June day in 1953 when the Franklin barn ignites into flame. Ada and her mother enter the burning building to rescue their animals. The scorching heat\, the roar of the blaze\, the shrill bellows of so many cows trapped inside—all of it changes Ada. For the first time\, she fears death and—for the first time—she doubts God. After the fire\, she no longer can heal. Then Ada meets Will Burk and his pet raven\, Cicero. And then there is another fire.” \n“Fire Is Your Water is acclaimed memoirist Jim Minick’s first novel. Built on magical realism and social observation in equal measure\, it never gives way to sentimentality and provides an insider’s glimpse into the culture of Appalachia. A jealous raven\, a Greek chorus of one\, punctuates the story with its judgments on the characters and their actions until a tragic accident brings Ada and Will together in a deeper connection.”
