Thanks to everyone who watched the videos back in April and placed your vote for the People Choice. That part of the challenge was won by Zack Wingate and his video “Eggcellent Pandemic Success.” If you have wondered about whether or not raising chickens for eggs is for you, Zach will answer all your questions. The People’s Choice award comes with a $500 prize.
The Video Challenge drew 13 presentations from Galax and Grayson County high school students. All the videos are still available for viewing on the Grayson LandCare YouTube channel. In addition to judging by the community, a panel of judges viewed the videos, asked each applicant additional questions, and selected the 1st-3rd place winners with one honorable mention.
The winners are:
Drew Morris and Joseph Jordan- Honorable mention, Conservation Club
Ben Burnette- 3rd place, Love your community $250
Zach Wingate- 2nd place, Eggcellent Pandemic Adventure $500
Peyton Isom-1st place, Grayson Eldercare $1000

This is a new format for our yearly contest for high school students. Given the pandemic and virtual learning, the video format seemed appropriate. Special thanks to our primary sponsor, Charlotte Hanes of River Ridge Farm for the generous prize money again this year. Thanks are also due to the teachers that supported the students to create the entries, the students who entered, the community members who voted in the People’s Choice portion off the contest and the judges who offered their time and expertise. The students always come up with really interesting projects and we hope the video format will make it easier for the whole community to be aware of their creative solutions to address issues they see here in Grayson County and Galax.
