Food Independence Highlights for 2024

Demand for the services provided by Food Independence continues to grow. Over 157,000 pounds of food was delivered to an average of 360 households, increasing close to 400 families during the holidays. Rising food prices due to inflation have helped drive that increase. At the same time, sourcing food more expensive as well; food pantry expenses were $55,200 this year. Fortunately, grants and generous donations have stayed ahead of food costs. Food Independence is run entirely by a crew of 54 volunteers assisted by students from Oakhill Academy. Monthly distribution requires approximately 250 hours, which adds up to 3,000 hours a year.

This year Food Independence volunteers were also on the front line helping the county deliver emergency supplies to residents in the aftermath of hurricane Helene.

Thank you to everyone who has donated their time or money to help Food Independence serve so many people in our community.
