The Community Food Forest Handbook

November 19, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm EST

Catherine Bukowski is a researcher, author, educator, and communicator. She is currently wrapping up her Ph.D. at the College of Natural Resources and the Environment at Virginia Tech, where she co-taught an agroforestry and whole-farm-planning course that incorporated permaculture principles. She studied with Dave Jacke on food forest design, has a certificate in Collaborative Community Leadership, and is a trained facilitator.
Catherine previously co-coordinated a forest farming virtual community for the online Cooperative Extension network and now sits on the Board of Directors for the Association of Temperate Agroforestry. She has worked internationally in community development and agroforestry as a researcher in Costa Rica, Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras and program manager for Trees for the Future. Her latest accomplishment is the publication of The Community Food Forest Handbook: How to Plan, Organize, and Nurture Edible Gathering Places which can be purchased in advance of its July 2018 publication at www.communityfoodforests.com/handbook

Fueled by the popularity of permaculture, agroecology, and agroforestry- community food forests are capturing the imaginations of people in neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the United States. Along with community gardens and farmers markets, community food forests can help create access to nutritious fresh food and promote environmental sustainability. But perhaps their most important outcome is the educational opportunities they provide in the process. They are interactive learning grounds focused on food- and eco-literacy as well as civic engagement for creating change in local food systems and urban green infrastructure. While interest in installing community food forests in public spaces is on the rise, the best ways to organize and lead groups of people to successfully create a food forest project has received little attention—and that is the focus of The Community Food Forest Handbook!

Join us November 19th for a presentation about the book and book signing.
