The school garden is really taking shape! Rick and Jen Cavey and I spent a day a few weeks ago creating raised bed “kits” in the comfort of their heated garage. Thursday I put them together on site at Independence Elementary school. It only took about 10-15 minutes for each box. Rick delivered a load of mixed topsoil and compost from Chestnut Creek Trading in Galax and yesterday Erin Farmer, Caroline Clough and I laid out the garden, put down cardboard for grass control and filled the boxes!
Great news! We received a GroMoreGood Grassroots Grant, presented by The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation and KidsGardening. The $500 grant award will allow us to purchase mulch for the pathways, and buying a few more fence posts, deer-fencing and and an entry gate. Once we have the fencing, we can actually take the kids outside and start planting! Eventually, we’ll also surround the garden with a picket fence so it looks pretty.
It’s great to have the support of the principal Ms. Campbell and science teacher Ms. Grubb. I can’t wait to see what this project looks like next year! If you’d like to help or donate to the project, please contact Michelle at 276-768-0597.
