The Free Market Helps People Starting Over

Since 2018, the Free Market has had a special section not open to the public where we keep new and like-new housewares for agency clients who are starting over—for example, aging out of foster care, getting an apartment after homelessness, or recovering from loss due to fire or flood.  Access to this area requires a referral, in person or written, from a local agency.  It is primarily used by DSS and Mt. Rogers Community Services, but a referral can also come from the police, a church, school, fire or rescue personnel.  While we do not have room for furniture, we can usually give people all the non-furniture items they need for the kitchen, bath and bedroom.

What can you do to help?  Donate new or gently used items that we tend to run out of:  Sheet sets (twin, king or queen), new pillows, bath and kitchen towels and washcloths, small appliances like coffeemakers or crockpots, and mixing/storage bowls.  We also like to give laundry baskets, silverware trays and dish drainers to each client, if they need them.

Our hours are 10-2 every Thursday, Friday and Saturday except when school is closed due to bad weather.  We offer tax receipts for donations if you need one.

We love being able to help people in these dire situations, and we always welcome your help, too!
