Meeting Feb 20 features Extension Agents at the Gate Center at 7pm

Join Extension agents Kevin Spurlin and Ashley Edwards, at the Gate Center meeting room 7pm Monday February 20th to get updates on agricultural pro-grams in the area and a quick tour of the Gate Center as well.

Kevin Spurlin is the Senior Extension Agent & Unit Coordinator in Grayson County. He holds a B.S. in Dairy Science from Virginia Tech and a M.S. in An-imal Science from the University of Missouri. He has been involved with the youth livestock show almost since the beginning and was a driving force be-hind combining the show with the Grayson County Fair. Spurlin played a key role in the development of the Gate Center as a food business incubator for area residents and a much-needed meeting place. Kevin is chair of the Ag advisory committee and will discuss its role in the community as well as the upcoming Ag awards banquet and Ag breakfasts and the new 4 the Soil initiative.

Ashley Edwards is the Extension Agent and Unit Coordinator for Carroll Coun-ty and the Commercial Horticulture Agent for Carroll, Grayson and Wythe Counties. She has a B.S. in Agricultural Sciences and a M.S. Career and Technical Education, Agricultural Education both from Virginia Tech. A life-long resident of Carroll County, born and raised on her family’s vegetable farm, Ashley joined Virginia Cooperative Extension in May 2017. Edwards serves the needs of producers including the production, harvesting, marketing and distribution of vegetables, small fruits, tree fruits, alternative specialty crops, and greenhouse crops. She also works with growers to assist them in attaining food safety certification such as USDA GAP and Harmonized GAP, as well as to comply with the Food Safety Modernization Act’s Produce Safety Rule.
