Food Independence was approached by Feeding Southwest Virginia(FSWVA) this Spring about taking on this program in Grayson County, officially called “The Summer Feeding Rural Non-Congregate Program” that is sponsored by USDA. Parents or guardians with children age 1-18 are eligible to pick up food boxes, with a focus on Grayson County school children. We will distribute food from 4:30 – 6:00 with check-in at the funeral home parking lot with food distribution at the pantry. Distribution dates are June 9 and 23, July 7 and 21 and August 4. Each “5-day meal box” contains 5 each breakfast and lunch items, 10 milks, juice and snacks. Since we are bi-weekly, each child will get two food boxes. All children ages 1-18 are eligible but their parents or guardians must complete an application either beforehand or at check-in. The application will take a few minutes to complete so we strongly encourage parents to use the QR code below to sign their kids up to avoid long waits in line. Please check Food Independence on the list of places offering this, and can only get food from one location (FSWVA will cross check for multiple pickups).
The food and its delivery are free, and it is prepacked so our main “cost” is volunteer time at distribution and reporting to FSWVA/USDA. We are excited to be offering this program to children, many of whom will not otherwise have breakfast, lunch or snacks during the summer.
