Two new events. Please let me know if you want to join.
Event 1: Collect Pollen from a monster chestnut:
The pictured tree is in between Meadows of the Dan and Floyd. It is a true giant. Exactly the type of tree we are hoping to produce.
I am going to go collect pollen from the tree (called Floyd4) on July 5. It should be in full bloom by then. There are two other large trees within half a mile of Floyd4 so we will collect pollen from those too.
Anyone who wants to join me, please let me know. After the pollen collection we can go hike the Rocky Knob trails or get lunch in Meadows of the Dan.
I will say this, for a tree that is supposed to be near extinct, it is really cool to find one that you cannot wrap your arms around. This is one of those trees.

Event 2: Chestnut Hike and Picnic
I am thinking that the American Chestnuts will still be blooming on July 11 in the higher elevations. To that end, I would like to hike from Hale Lake to Comers Rock overlook.
I understand that there are some good sized chestnuts on that hike. It will be cool to find some big ones and start our chestnut chasers group going!
Also, when we get to the overlook, I want to launch a drone to see if it can spot any flowers from the air while we relax and picnic.
Please let me know if you are interested in this too!
