Food independence distributed our first boxes in July 2020. Under a hundred but the beginning of a wonderful and fulfilling journey. We now distribute close to 400 boxes of food, to quote a recent visitor from Feeding SWVA, in a “smooth, well-organized machine”. We thank him for the compliment but think of it as “controlled chaos”. We are now providing food assistance to about 360 households with 800 residents per month. We do 450 households or more during the holidays!
How did this happen? A few folks with a wild idea found the most amazing, and dedicated, group of volunteers, anywhere! We plan; they execute! All 57 of them! It also takes money. We have an amazing group of private donors that provide about 60% of our $65,000 annual budget. We have been fortunate to get the remaining 40% from Twin County Community Foundation in recent years. Times are uncertain but we remain financially stable thanks to these folks and are fully “staffed” thanks to our volunteers!
If you want to donate in these uncertain times, make checks to Food Independence and send them to P.O. Box 201, Independence, VA 24348 or you can donate online at the Grayson LandCare website.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO FOOD INDEPENDENCE. THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED US GET TO A HEALTHY SIX!
