The Free Market is Building Community

Our initiative to keep usable items out of the landfill is in its 8th year, and its impact just keeps expanding!  Our wonderful receptionist Hannah remembers customers, gets to know them, helps them out, and in return they are helping us.  We now have a man who mows and trims our lawn; another who brings his trailer and hauls broken furniture that get dumped on the dock to the landfill; a local handyman who sealed our crumbling concrete floor so we can now keep it clean and not breathe concrete dust as we work; another who spray-painted a wall in the warehouse so our Medical Lending Library looks much cleaner and nicer.  None of these people accept pay; they just want to help us out.  And the kind feelings multiply, making everyone feel better about themselves and where we live.  In this era of division, we are crossing political, religious and socioeconomic lines to form a supportive, caring community.

And when we put out a call for items for our Outreach area, people respond!  The last call was for twin and queen sheet sets, and four brand-new sets were donated.  After helping three agency clients this week, our stocks are depleted.  Here are some things we really need in order to help people starting over:

Bath towel sets

Lightweight comforters

Silverware

Cooking utensils

Cookware

Mixing/storage bowls

Toasters

Microwaves

Coffeemakers

These don’t have to be new, as long as they are clean and in working order.  Please see if you have extras that you don’t need, and bring them when we are open.

Thank you in advance!
