Looking for something interesting to read? Join the Permaculture group for their winter book club January 15th at 5:00 at the home of Ann Watson in Independence. Please call Ann at 276-768-8171 for more details or to RSVP. They will be reading Soil: The Story of a Black Mother’s Garden by poet Camille T. Dungy. It is a memoir that explores themes of race, motherhood, and environmental justice through her experience of transforming her garden in a predominantly white Colorado town.
If you missed our garden cleanup workshop at the Permaculture Garden in November, the main takeaway is this: what are your goals? Or as Cynthia often says-it depends. In this case we were balancing making the garden look nice since it is on the main entrance to the Church of the Good Shepherd with still providing a home for overwintering insects and seed heads for birds. So we cut down the front half of the garden and left the rest. It was also time to replace some fruit trees that had died, collect seeds and do some weeding.
