One neighbor reminds us we don’t have to wait until August to think about caring for our local rivers and streams.
On Saturday, May 24th, residents, family members and friends on River Bend Road and Duck Roost Lane in Mount of Wilson gathered for a community cleanup event on the New River. Faced with so much debris left over from Hurricane Helene, these folks came together to spend a full day removing trash and getting piles of organic debris ready for a burn later on. There were 62 people who participated. They spent a full day and cleaned up about 2 miles of riverfront and several islands in the area. Everyone was so pleased with the results. Our goals for the day were to 1) get rid of trash, 2) stay safe, and 3) have fun. We managed to accomplish all that! If you’re interested in more information about how to organize such an event, feel free to contact Michelle at 276-768-0597, director at Grayson LandCare.org.
Please keep in mind that Helene caused major changes to the New and areas that were once shallow might be deep and visa versa. Choose a day with good visibility and make sure everyone has a life jacket. Here is a helpful Clean up guidelines prepared by the New River Wildlife Club.
Stay tuned for an informational meeting soon.
